Western Swing Hall of Famer Jody Nix was four years old when he got his first set of drums. At age 8 he became drummer five nights a week for a band his dad, Hoyle Nix, and uncle had in West Texas for 40 years. At age 11 he began playing the fiddle, started singing at age 16, recorded with Bob Wills at age 21 on the 1973 "Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys For The Last Time" as a guest artist and sang 3 songs.

“Bob Wills was a big influence on me.  He was a very, very close personal friend of my dad, my uncle and me, going back to when I was a little boy,” Nix explained. “He actually was my dad’s hero back in the 50s and they eventually became great friends. We worked together a lot. What a great, great time I had as a little boy, being around his music and getting to sit in with him.”

When Nix was very young, he took piano lessons for a little while from a very close friend of the family and played drums in the high school band. He now sings, plays fiddle, drums, a little bit of rhythm guitar but loves the fiddle most.

Nix began performing professionally in the summer of 1960. He primarily plays country and western swing. He said sometimes he will do Christmas seasonals or gospel at church.

“I praise God, give him all the glory for all the talent he gave me, my family, and the ability to play music all these years,” Nix said.

Nix, a resident of Big Spring, TX, said there have been great musicians and friends who have come and gone from his band over the past 39 years. Currently the band consists of Nix on fiddle and vocals; Robert Weeks on fiddle (for 25 years); Terry Thompson on drums (almost 10 years); John Powell as bass player (about 3 years); and Johnny Cox on steel guitar.

You can find a more complete bio and comprehensive list of his accolades and accomplishments here.

He has a weekly radio program. Jody Nix’s Sunday Night Country plays exclusively on KBYG 1400 AM and 106.3 FM every Sunday night at 6-8pm, with an encore show airing 8-10pm.
