Serenity Starr Slater, 16, using the band name StarrSlater, released her first single in early September 2025.
The Beech Grove resident has been singing since she was 3 and is primarily self taught with some help from her mother, Heather. “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, was the first song she sang at the age of 3.
“I used to be nervous to put myself out there but I got support from my mom, friends and family,” STARR said.
Starr plays a little piano that she is taking classes for and her older brother, Dacoda, plays guitar and keyboard for fun in his free time, she said. Her mother’s creativity is in her art, not in music, and she can do cover art.
“Limbo is my first written song and I feel like I have a big connection with the song” Starr said. “I'm hoping to write and make more.” The inspiration for the song was about how her ex did her wrong and had crossed so many boundaries to hurt her.
“Even though my songs come off as sad I want people to know they can grow from moments that have happened to them,” Starr said. “And I hope to inspire people and give them advice in my music on how to take a situation better and to cope with what they go through.”
Her musical influences include Ethan Bortnick, Boywithuke, and Daniel Caesar and if she could perform with anyone it would be Ethan Bortnick. “He's been my favorite artist for a long time and his music inspired me the most to start making music,” she explained.
Her favorite genres include Indie, pop, and alternative because she likes mellow tone songs but she hasn't had many chances to perform anywhere besides school choir when she was younger. She said she has always been into singing but she also thinks about modeling and acting.
She finds hitting high notes and making beats to be the most challenging part of the music business. Her favorite part is “I get to express myself and share my stories, hoping for others to understand.”
Her advice to aspiring singer/ songwriters? “I would tell them to make the kind of song they want to make not what other people would want. The song should mean something to you the most,” she said.
